To the Editor:

I’m writing because I want to speak my mind about a recent issue sparking debate on this campus. We are lucky to have many guests here at Brown this semester, and as a community we must strive to give them the warmest welcome possible. In many cases, I think we succeed. However, I have heard one guest ridiculed innumerable times, and I think this has to stop. Lamp/Bear has every right to be here, and should be treated as such! Too many times I’ve seen the metallic bear insulted right to his face! People have claimed he is too big, too hard, not really art or even something spawned from their most surreal nightmares. While the bear manages to keep a big, glowing — albeit ominous — smile on his face, I know it hurts him deep inside his cavernous heart. While he may not be Bruno, he is our Blueno! And we need to start treating him like that. This is a call to action for members of this community to give our unnerving friend the love, fear and respect he deserves. So if you see him sitting alone on a quiet night, his light casting shadows in both your mind and heart, and his coal-black button eyes pierce yours from across the quad, maybe go up and introduce yourself. You might even be shopping some of the same classes.
